Host : Bakul<br />
Members attended : Soumya, Shaifali, Ashwini, Supraja<br />
First meeting in the new year took place on the last Monday (January 27) of the month as decided.<br />
It was a pleasure to meet Avni; Ashwini's daughter and Mahita; Supraja's daughter!! Both of them are so cute and adorable!<br />
As we met after a gap of two months,it was nice to catch up with everyone.<br />
One of the interesting topics discussed was about the book <b>"Lean in" </b>by Sheryl Sandberg.She is the COO of Facebook and is ranked on Fortune's list of 50 most powerful women in business and as one of the Time's 100 most influential people in the world!The book is about women, work and the will to lead. She offers compelling,commonsense solutions that can empower women to achieve their full potential.<br />
After reading this book,I think,it can change the conversation from what women can't do to what they can!<br />
All of us agreed to brainstorm about this topic and discuss it in more detail in the next meeting.<br />
Here's the recipe for Khajur kheer ( Dates payasam)<br />
Ingredients :<br />
Dates -remove the seeds and cut into small pieces 1/2 cup<br />
Milk - 2 cups, warm<br />
Sugar - 4 to 5 tbsp<br />
Ghee - 4 tsp<br />
Almonds- thinly sliced 1 tsp<br />
Rawa (sooji)- 2 tbsp<br />
Water - 1 and half cup,boiling<br />
How to :<br />
Roast the sooji separately till it is golden in color. Keep aside.<br />
In a pan, add ghee and roast the almond slices. Add dates and roast till soft. Add roasted sooji.<br />
Then add boiling water to this mixture and let it cook. (3 to 4 min)<br />
Add sugar once it is cooked. Lastly, add warm milk and let it simmer.<br />
You can add nutmeg powder or cardamom powder for flavor.<br />
Serve warm.<br />
Enjoy..<br />
<br />

Host: Shaifali<br />
Attended: Bakul, Sowmya Reddy, Prajakta<br />
Absent: Ashwini, Supraja, Soumya Prakash<br />
<br />
Minutes of the meeting:<br />
Dates: October 21st, for anniversary meet. Details in mail.<br />
Next meet idea by Prajakta: Out of this world pizza place meeting with kids.<br />
November and December hosts to be decided, since its winter and people will be travelling.<br />
Every last Monday to be Portland Sahelis meeting day for every month.<br />
Since member count is low in winter, for November, the meeting will be held earlier.<br />
Since, Portland Saheli is primarily for those women who are homemakers or students, the number of members in Portland Saheli will always be in flux.For instance, Students who finish their studies take up jobs.<br />
Congratulations Nisha on your new job!<br />
<br />
The topic of discussion was: whether extra curricular activities are required for preschoolers?<br />
There were different viewpoints on this.Some said, exposing kids will expand their horizon, inculcate creativity in their minds, so that later on they can choose which path they would like to focus and pursue. Another viewpoint is to have playdates, or even small visit form neighbors is enough to occupy the child. My question is - what if we do not do much of the activities -is the child going to miss on stuff big time in his life? I myself did not have much exposure to a myriad of activities during my school year,as I did not have the time to do all these things. Where does one find time to do everything?<br />
<br />
See you all at the anniversary meet.<br />

Dear Sahelis, since the past one year, we me and my son have been waiting for the Washington County Fair to visit us again! And yes, its here! Next WE, both the airshow and the fair are happening in Hillsboro. My son enjoyed the monster truck show, the small farm and lots of rides at the fair. Its a must go for all kids. SO, I hope you have lots of fun this WE with the weather being at our side too.I have my doubts whether I will be able to spend two days at the fair this year like last time. I have this excruciating backpain, that is increasing in intensity day by day...:(</div>

Host : Bakul<br />
Members who attended the meeting : <span style="color: purple;">Shaifali, Soumya and Sowmya</span><br />
<br />
Thank you for making it on a cold and rainy morning ! We missed you
Prajakta and Nisha..even though Nisha came for a little while to meet
us.<br />
We talked and a covered a range of topics. Everyone agreed on how they
have come to like and enjoy Portland ! We thought about different ideas
for topics and spreading the word about Portland saheli.<br />
As suggested by Sowmya, the agenda of the meeting was to learn <b>how to make soft chapatis</b>.<br />
Here are some tips on how to make and keep the chapatis soft !<br />
* Allow the dough to rest for at least 15 min. before making chapatis.<br />
* While preparing the chapati/ poli, use as little atta as you can for dusting to avoid sticking.<br />
* When you roast the chapati, flip the chapati only twice. First when
you see the bubbles on top and second time, when the other side has
little brown spots.<br />
* To store the chapati, use tissue paper in the dabba to avoid excess moisture.<br />
* To keep the chapati softer, you can apply a drop of ghee to each roasted chapati.<br />
Hope this helps and all of you can enjoy softer chapati !<br />
The next meeting will be at Sowmya's place and we will learn how to drape a saree.<br />
Wish you all a very happy Memorial day and long weekend !</div>

<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
First of all, thank you folks for making it on time early in the morning.</div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
I would also like to thank Ruchi for joining us this time.</div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
The topic of the day was "How to manage stress".</div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
With my son going from full time to half day school, his activities,</div>
</div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
getting back to my volunteering and gym activity; things looked very chaotic to me.</div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
I felt wondering what is keeping me so busy that I am not able to feel good about myself</div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
and/or keep my house organised. The more I thought about it, the more I was stressed.</div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
This was the time after Hema and Trupti moved out of here and I didn't start play-dates</div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
with other friends. Not having a play-date can be very hard on us, let alone the kids.</div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
They were much more than a play-date for us. But I am sure all of us move on somehow.</div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<div>
All of you gave that kind of support to deal with that kind of stress. Each one of you had</div>
<div>
your own approach to the issues I was dealing with. Doing one thing at a time, informing</div>
</div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
the spouse that you are stressed out, taking things a little easy when you don't feel like it,</div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
not comparing myself with other friends. The assurance that you are all available when I</div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
need someone is very valuable. I didn't get a chance to inform all of you that my husband</div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
was pleasantly surprised/very happy when he got back because the house was perfectly clean.</div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
Yes I gave up my TV time for that day to do that. </div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<div>
I would like to add my tips to reduce stress:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
Selfcare. Now this can mean a lot of things.</div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
I wanted to start a game day every month where we can play some board games</div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
or card games. I would like to solicit all your inputs on this.</div>

<br />
The topic of discussion was how strong should a woman be in stressful situations?<br />
I invite all PS members who attended the meeting to pen down their reflections from the meeting in the blog to give this topic justice. <br />
The next topic of "Stress" which will be taken at Soumya's house today is generated by this meeting.<br />
We also had our PS members dinner at Wasabi. I hope it was a nice evening out for everyone.:) Prajakta did mention the issue of PS members getting late at PS meetings, which I hope will be taken into consideration for all future meetings. The general duration of any PS meeting is-<br />
half an hour- warming up, people coming<br />
next half an hour -discussion starts<br />
next half an hour- snacks start along with discussion or activity.<br />
Usually, the duration is of 1 n a half hours or maximum 2 hours.:)<br />

We all talk about our families in the house, but I wonder how may of us use stories as much as we could in our lives?<br /><br />Since my inlaws were here last year, we introduced them to all our friends...and now they have become a part of our conversations so much. My inlaws tell us about all the family and stories about what is going on with them. And we tell them about all our friends and all the things that we do with them and things that are happening with them. And that not only gives us common things to talk about, it also tells us that each other is well and is being taken care of even if we are not there to do it ourselves. And when I have kids, it is all these stories that I will remember to tell them about their grandparents. And I have noticed that the more stories we tell about other people, the easier we find to tell them. <br /><br />Think about our PS meetings, we tell so many stories about ourselves, about each other, etc during our meetings! I wonder if the sahelis have any suggestions on how we can do this more in our lives. In order to keep a little bit of home alive in this alien land.<br /><br />AshwiniAshwinihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09361469573124847373noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8679251654435374856.post-343168363235460042012-01-12T21:47:00.000-08:002012-01-12T22:23:36.267-08:00Portland Saheli Second Anniversary CelebrationDate : Dec 17<br />Venue : Supraja's house<br />Members present : Ashwini, Amaravati, Bakul, Hema, Himani, Lekha, Meera, Nisha, Shaifali, Soumya R, Sowmya, Trupti<br /><br />As December marked the end of year 2011..Portland Saheli celebrated its new milestone into the 3rd year. This indeed needed a celebration as every month a Saheli hosting a meeting in their sweet homes and bringing a new friend into the group every meeting brought fresh ideas like book discussion, exchange of views on various issues and current affairs,here and back home. Its amazing to see how PS has grown over the past one year! We have 14 active members so far.<br />We welcome Amaravathi , our new member! It was great knowing you! It gives me great happiness to see new members joining PS. One of the goals of PS when I first started it, was/is to be a support group to the people who are new to the US. I remember when I had come first to Portland in 2005, my world was just my husband and the vacant streets. Its great to see PS grow and welcome new members as they settle down with their life in Portland or the US.<br />A small not for Amaravathi, I always encourage new members to read the history and goals of PS, which is also the first post of this blog so that you get more famialiar with the working of PS.<br />During this meeting, Himani shared a wonderful idea of families also getting to know each other. Planning for this will commence in January for the family gettogether. So far, we discussed the possiblility of booking the hall of the offices of either Trupthi's husband or Hemalatha's husband. Suggestions included of doing a potluck.<br />For the December- winter session, it was decided that we will not have the monthly meeting but instead have the much awaited Annual meeting. Thank you Supraja for volunteering to host this event!<br />As we shared our skills/hobbies, Ashwani initiated the starting of knitting sessions during her less stressful class period.<br />Nisha is into cooking, which is fabulous because when it comes to people like me, I can myself learning so much from her!<br />Himani how about reviving your painting skills ?<br />I shared having dancing as one of my passions..My hidden desire-:)I have always wished to choreograph-a dance sequence at the India Day celebration in August every year!:))<br />Trupthi an engineer by profession, has yet to decide her hobby which I am sure is hiding somewhere waiting to be explored. Hang on there, we won't leave you until you come out with that little secret of yours!<br />Ashwani and Nisha shared their painting hobbies. Amravathi shared her skill of tailoring. OMG, Amaravathi in PDX this skill I am sure is well sought after! How I wish , I would have learned how stitch blouses and do eyebrows way back from India! So, girls-<br />if you need some stitching done- who to look for!<br />I am happy to share that we have people from varied walks of life in our group, Ashwani-a Counsellor by profession, so, we know when we need someone to just listen..whom to go to!<br />Very interesting indeed..I encourage to those members who were not present to please share your hobbies with the rest of the sahelis.<br />We have started the email thread of sharing your contact numbers only by email. I DO NOT encourage anyone to share their personal contact information on the blog for privacy purposes.<br />I got to speak with Amaravathi and was so happy to hear her positive reaction towards PS. Amaravathi could you please go ahead and share your experience at your first meeting of PS, in the comment section or by posting a new topic in the blog.<br />The meeting happened for a good three hours this time!!<br />Next on Agenda:<br />Second Annual Meeting at Supraja's place<br />January Family meeting planning<br />Please feel free to add your hobbies, even if you did not attend the meeting and comment on this post!<br /><em><strong>Winter Getaways for December:)<br /></strong></em>Lego Display at The Children's Museum<br />Zoo Lights- Very popular<br />Peacock Lane Lights<br />Photo with Santa<br />Polar Mount Hood Express<br />Did I miss out some more? Feel free to add to the list!:)<br /><strong><em>Happy Holidays Sahelis</em></strong>!<br />ShaifaliShaifalihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10002244767161630540noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8679251654435374856.post-69565707308950583742011-10-03T20:06:00.000-07:002011-10-04T19:43:59.648-07:00Portland Saheli, September 2011<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); "><div>Venue-Hema's House</div><div>Date-Sept. 28</div><div>Sahelis- Ashwini, Divya, Hema, Himani, Lekha, Meera, Nisha, Prajakta, Roshni, Supraja,Trupti,</div><div><br /></div><div>A wonderful darbar was held on wednesday which fell on one of the aspecious days of Dussahera.</div><div>The meet was really worthy to have most of the sahelis coming together.</div></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">The topic for discussion "Grandma's tips" bubbled up a thick froth with lots of thoughtful tips.</span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); "></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">The tips enlightened us on aspects like beauty, child care and general health.</span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); "></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">Fall is approaching with tricking and diwali and dusshera with treating.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); "></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">So passing on the shivers and chills to the next hostess to make a big deal with the Saheli meet.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small; "><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small; ">Hema</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); "><div> </div></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); "><div> </div><div> </div></span></div></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8679251654435374856.post-15907308856517098742011-09-07T16:10:00.001-07:002011-09-07T16:17:40.788-07:002011 August Saheli Meeting<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial; font-size: small; "><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">Attendees: Roshini, Bakul, Prajakta, Hema, Soumya, Lekha, Meera, Himani.
